Inspiring healthy lifestyles have teamed up with Wigan Athletic Community Trust, Wigan Youth Zone and Wigan Council to offer some of Wigan and Leigh’s most vulnerable young people the chance to access more sport, leisure, art and education activities, thanks to a new grant from Wigan Council’s Deal for Communities Investment Fund.
The Pathway 2 Participation scheme is a partnership between Wigan Athletic Community Trust, Inspiring healthy lifestyles and Wigan Youth Zone, that provides a mentoring service to 12 – 19 year olds to enable them take part in activities designed to improve their health and well-being, while also raising their aspirations and ambitions.
Sport coaches and youth workers from the Community Trust, Inspiring healthy lifestyles and Wigan Youth Zone work with the identified young people over a number of weeks, helping to improve their confidence before helping them to attend activities on their own.
Since the scheme began in May, 40 young people have been identified to take part in the programme, with a number being supported to re-enter education, gain qualifications and join sports clubs.
Ben Clossick, 16, who is involved with the scheme, said: “I got involved with Pathway 2 Participation over the summer and was able to go on different trips like mountain biking and trampolining that kept me occupied, while also working towards getting into college.
“Now I’m at college doing bricklaying and I’ve just been offered a job. That’s all down to me getting into the programme – it’s really helped me to grow up.”
